Details of Experience
Debora E. was living independently in her two-story apartment before her hospitalization. She managed her daily routine and regularly walked up and down the stairs in her home without assistance. Debbie was an active, self-sufficient individual who was fully capable of taking care of herself. She valued her independence and had no mobility limitations before this unexpected event.
One evening while out to dinner, Debora suddenly fainted at the restaurant. She woke up in West Boca Medical Center. At that time, the cause of her fainting episode was unclear. No X-rays were taken, and she was discharged home. When she returned to her apartment, her son’s friend assisted her up the stairs, but she was in significant pain and could barely move. She was unable to reach her bed. Emergency services were called, and she returned to the hospital, where they completed a radiology exam, revealing a fractured knee. She was placed in a cast and referred to the Encore for rehabilitation.
On February 10th, 2026, Debora arrived at The Encore at Boca Raton Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. She was unable to walk or independently transfer into her chair. Therapy was challenging, as she had to rely on others in ways she never had before. Initially, the team focused on overall strengthening her healthy leg while her fractured knee healed. Once cleared by her orthopedist, range-of-motion exercises began, along with transfer training and walker use. Within the first two weeks of her stay, she had progressed to walking 75 feet with her therapist’s assistance.
Over time, throughout her stay, Debora expressed, “I am most worried about getting up the stairs at home.” With that concern in mind, the therapy team began to focus on helping her with stairs. She was only able to climb one step, and each day her therapist would add one or two steps By the time of her discharge, Debbie was able to walk 200 feet with a walker and climb 14 steps. Although she was worried, her hard work and determination paid off. Debora was discharged to her home on March 6, 2026.
Today, Debbie can walk comfortably with her walker and safely manage stairs, demonstrating tremendous progress. Her therapist expects a full recovery over the next few months. We wish Debbie much success as she continues on her rehabilitation journey.
